1964 Fender Mustang

This guitar was one of the first Fender Mustangs ever made, it was completely original, and it was in excellent playing condition - super-low action, no buzzing, great frets, a great neck, and all the mojo that one can imagine in the '64 Fender pickups.

Mustangs were first produced in August of 1964, and this one was date-stamped August 8, 1964. So, it was among the first batches to be made. The pots were dated Sept 64, which was common for Fender to create a group of necks and bodies, then create a group of pots and pickups, and then assemble them as a final process. Fender had 600 employees at that point with most of them on the floor making guitars. Leo Fender sold the business to CBS Corporation that January in '65.

The Fender Mustang model introduced in August 1964 was originally available in three colors: Red, Blue, and White. Although similar to Fender's custom colors of the time: Dakota Red, Daphne Blue, and Olympic White, these naming conventions were apparently never used on the Mustang. The Mustang was part of a redesign of Fender's line of student level guitars which included the Duo-sonic and Musicmaster. The Mustang offered somewhat more sophisticated electronics than earlier student guitars and also featured a 24-inch scale length. In its earliest era, the Mustang was available in a shorter 22 1/2-inch scale length, but these guitars are very uncommon.
